This was the second annual comp with our club, maroubra and tama competing in a teams style event to see who is the coolest, calmest and most collected club of all. The format was simple, 10 guys from each club, all surf once in a 25min - 3 man heat. The end of the day the points are compiled and one club is the victor.

Our team was as follows, (in order of ankle size)
1. Tom Bolitho
2. Jesse Mulham
3. Matt Puerto Pike
4. Tim boreham
5. Jared Delamont
6. Martin Smith
7. Adrian Harper
8. Guy Williment.
9. Dan Reynolds (DK)
10. Josh Ruttyn (DK)

the waves were borderline unsurfable. 6-8ft beachbreak madness. the thing was the waves were perfect if u could survive the paddle out. I have huge amount of respect for the groms that paddled out, jared, tom and jesse all risked their brittle frames in the name of team glory. and well, they did it. they surfed insane and brought it home for us. Honorable mentions must go out to Adrian Harper with a barrel that had the whole beach screaming, and Tristan Hogan with a ridiculous back flip that made me fear for his ribs.

Sydney Bodyboard Club, WE WON!

March 28th, 2010

When hiring movies, be wary of hiring sequels. Because generally in my opinion they let you down, are hard to sit through and can never be as good as the first one.
A few good things to look out for are:

a) are any of the original actors appearing in the sequel? if the answer is no then put the DVD back on the shelf and try asking the fat guy behind the counter for some advice on new releases.

b) have you heard of the sequel? if you walk in and say "wow i didn't know they made a sequel to Point Break?" then you can probably assume it sux more than walking barefoot through kings cross.

c) what section is the sequel in? if the sequel appears in the 3 day hire section then it's a big sign that it may have never have lasted more than a week the overnight hire department for good reason.

d) What is the title of the sequel? if the title contains any of these terms then you know it's destined for an early grave - "reloaded" "i still know what you did..." "cruise control" and the list is too long.

Anyway i hope with these tips you are able to steer clear of hiring the dreaded sequel, however remember that there are always exceptions to any rule. For example i'm a fan of the classic number after the original title, lethal weapon 2, 3, and 4. Or Beverly Hills Cop, 1 and 2. But again they pass the above guidelines, they still have the original actors and were often bigger budget than the first.

The Second SBC comp on Sunday had all the great makings of a good sequel, the same stars, the same format the same people sponsoring it. The only problem was the waves they were, shocking! lets hope the third installment does a little better.

GROMMETS
!. Cammeron WILSON
2. I realise it is now the 22nd of March, and the comp was a lifetime ago. I realise that this is not the first time i have not posted on time, and i realise that many probably don't bother to check this because i do not update it regularly.
But as Bob Dylan once said, these times are a changin'.

As of next comp the results will be up the following day, regardless of how sunburnt, sore and generally tired i am. And if the comp is at whaley, (which it is next weekend on the 28th) i will march up to my house and give you live updates of the day .

Because i am aware that this blog has one of the largest followings of any blog in Sydney *

Ok . on with it.

(*please not that the author of this blog is known for his outlandish statements which are rarely backed up with any evidence and is known for not even mentioning anything bodyboarding related on a bodyboarding based blog)

GROMMETS
1.
    Josh WILLIAMS
2. I understand that some of you rely on me for your monthly word intake but this entry is going to be short and sweet. Why didn't I turn up? simply because i have always wanted the nickname "no show" and well the only way to get that non de plum was to not show. Sacrifices had to be made, and well in all honesty maybe you guys will prefer just results without the essay paying you all out.
truth is i love you.

But before you get rid of me completely i did listen in on some conversation down at the local hang out and i was told Dan Webster was ripping again in opens taking out the comp for the second month in a row. It true Webster style Dan has decided to make a late run for the end of year title, trust him to turn up fashionably late. The guy could make a potato sack cool.

Daggles the crowd favourite won DK, in my eyes Daggles is already a winner. Second was Ed France, is there anything the french can't do? yeah, come first.

In other club news there has been a petition to stop me writing this blog.

Ok the results are as follows, keep it salty.

SENIOR MENS
1st Dan REYNOLDS
2nd Nick CHANDLER
3rd Mick PARKHILL

GROMMETS
1st Matt BANHAM
2nd Josh WILLIAMS
3rd Cameron WILSON
4th Alex MILLER
5th Will MULHAM
6th Cameron DRAKE

GRAND MASTERS
1st Greg WEBSTER
2nd Tony RABBIDGE
3rd Mal LEYDEN
4th Andy MILLER
5th Steve MACPHERSON

CADETS
1st Harry SARIN
2nd Jesse MULHAM
3rd Eugene HEAD-TOUSSANT
4th Zac DURYEA

A great day for a our latest club comp, Whale beach was the location and we were lucky enough to hang out with offshore 2-3ft clean waves all day until things got a little awkward and went onshore in the early afternoon. The highlight of the day was seeing those with girlfriends getting revved up as they realised that Chris Strada had taken their loved one out too lunch, I did think Chris was took it a bit far by having the fact printed on his shirt. Even though Strada did steal the spotlight a bit, my personal highlight of the day was Steve’s new facial hair. An inspiration to us all.

The Jack Stance final (that’s code for dropknee kids) saw the usual suspects paddle out in the fun waves. Daggles was offered any wave he wanted during the final as his competitors were respectful of his hardcore local whaley status, however Matt Pike ended up landing the moves that were to win the final. Matt or Puerto as his fans know him as, was drawing lines in the smooth waves better than any Adobe design program could dream of. After the final he retired to his balcony where he had a chai latte and read an article titled “interior design, is it really design?” while awaiting the opens prone final.
D.K.
1st Matt PIKE
2nd Shane DAVIS
3rd Dan REYNOLDS
4th Alex NATOLI
5th Luke SHEARER

The Opens final saw the waves deteriorate to 1-2ft slosh, but it didn’t seem to bother the six man final. Puerto or Matt as he known to his enemies, linked some rad combos from out the back all the way to dry sand but it was Dan ‘Number One’ Webster who came through with the winning wave landing the only solid air in the final, a smooth flip in the last minutes. Dan was gracious in victory and accepted his first place on the podium in a humble style Fran Sinatra would admire. Dan was dressed in Nudie Jeans (RRP $299.95) and Ksubi shirt (RRP $69.95) courtesy of General Pants Co.
OPENS
1st Dan WEBSTER
2nd Matt PIKE
3rd Max ARENT
4th Tristan HOGAN
5th Ricky MICHAEL
6th Oli MINTER

Guy Williment had taken a vow of silence for the day, as he explores his inner self. We had a conversation in which we communicated by writing in the sand. This seemed to help Guy focus more than his other competitors taking out the final in true Buddhist style, congrats man I look forward to our next sand conversation. Guy surfed really good today. The other juniors surfed really well in the deteriorating conditions, Martin Smith proving his tight style is consistent every time I see him surf and Jasha Sandles won the “coolest first name” award for the day.
JUNIORS
1st Guy WILLIMENT
2nd Martin SMITH
3rd Michael BURLEY
4th Jasha SANDLES
5th Russell DAVIES

The Men’s division showed why they are called the Men’s division. They are Men. The final saw a tight tussle (tus·sle to have a vigorous physical or verbal struggle with somebody) between Luke Shearer and Jeremy Bonouvrie for first position. Shearer showed all that time in BSC watching bodyboarding vids in slow mo has helped his comp surfing reach a superior level. Jeremy argued while he did not win the final, he is in fact the real “MAN” of the division because he builds stuff for a living and owns a tool belt. I argued that Jeremy’s haircut is the least “MAN” like in the club so that cancels out any man points he gets from owning tools.
MENS
1st Luke SHEARER
2nd Jeremy BONOUVRIE
3rd Alex BENNETT
4th Ryan FENASSE

Senior Men’s saw Daggles aka “Douglas” shred his way to victory in the final as he proved his local knowledge at Whaley was always going to be too much for Shane and Nick. Daggles looks so comfortable out his local that some mistook him and his long blonde locks for some mysterious mermaid, tests were down however and proved that he is not a mermaid nor merman but is beginning to grow gills due to the excessive amounts of time he spends in the water.
SENIOR MENS
1st Dan REYNOLDS
2nd Nick CHANDLER
3rd Shane DAVIS

The Mega-groms hit the water with the energy and flair that we have become used to seeing, their enthusiasm is pretty contagious and you can’t help but feel like surfing 1ft waves for 8 hours. Matt Banham and Alex Miller fought it out for first with Matt narrowly winning, with spins far ahead of his time. It was a close battle between the Camerons for 3rd but it was Cameron Wilson who scraped in. I’m pretty sure everyone watches these kids all day jealous of their energy, they surf their heat then free surf all day until their noses are bright red. Keep the froth alive mega-groms!

GROMMETS
1st Matt BANHAM
2nd Alex MILLER
3rd Cameron WILSON
4th Cameron DRAKE

Jesse was my pick for the final just because he surfs whaley almost as much as Daggles, but Harry Sarin was ripping and proved me wrong. My other hot tip for today’s final was Zac who came in third showing his skills are improving faster than my facial hair, (which is quick). Pretty sure this whole division will be stepping on some toes next year and beating the older guys when they move up.
CADETS
1st Harry SARIN
2nd Jesse MULHAM
3rd Zac DURYEA
4th Garry MORRIS
5th Eugene HEAD-TOUSSANT
6th Henry BAIRD

The talk about last weeks strike was still on everyone’s tongues and Greg cut out all the nonsense and just surfed too good for everyone. Mal and Tony were close on his heels but Greg never really looked like losing, with his son Dan taking out the Opens final there has been talk of some form of corruption but in my mind everyone is just jealous that the Webster family proved they are the most talented father/son booger combo this side of the Brooklyn bridge.
GRAND MASTERS
1st Greg WEBSTER
2nd Mal LEYDON
3rd Tony RABBIDGE
4th Paul MACE
5th Andrew MILLER

As always thanks to everyone who turned up and stayed around all day judging, cooking, making jokes and helping pack up. Thanks all the parents who make sure the contest happens, and thanks to anyone who actually reads my banter. Above are some photos from the day shot my Cameron Farkas, anyone else with photos from the comps can send them to me at timboreham@gmail.com

Peace

July Contest - 5th July Curl Curl

Sunday Morning, the day after American Independence Day. That is completely irrelevant, was just looking for an intro. Sun was out, and the waves were solid. The day saw the swell building from 4ft to some serious size sets in the 5ft mark cleaning up all the competitors every 10mins or so. If you were lucky enough to get out the back there were some ok waves to be had with some solid ramps being hit by both the younger and older guys.

With the finals approaching the stand outs were Matt Pike in the DK final, linking together a solid set all the way from out the back to the shore. How those guys were Dropping the knee out there is beyond me.

Eugene Head-Toussant proved in the cadets final that having an impressive wetsuit neck tan definitely improves your surfing and took out the final with class. My tip for the final was Zac DURYEA, who came third probably because he lost focus due to the whole final having last names neither he or i could pronounce. This final definitely made those with last names like 'smith' and 'jones' feel inadequate.

The juniors once again showed some of the most competitive surfing in the club with Miles Mortensen only just overcoming Martin 'i look like pierre" Smith. Miles and Martin showed that the higher divisions need to be worried when these guys move up next year.

The grommets did well not to drown in the solid conditions, i was getting survival tips from the kids when Alex Miller suggested his secret to final success was sugar products. Josh Williams however must have had more red cordial today because he was number one when the final results came in. Well done to the guys for giving the bigger waves a go when even the older guys were tightening their leashes.

Mens saw the club favourite Chris Strada on fire all day with his classic humour we have become used to. In the final however Chris refused to even crack a smile, giving the silent treatment to his fellow competitors completely focused on the task at hand. He nailed it winning the day for Mens, proving he is indeed, a man.Well done Strada, you are my vote for this years "most loved" competitor.

As for Senior Mens, i was offered bribes and even threatened to "persuade" the judges in their favor. Nick Chandler offered said he would let me reverse park his sweeet car, Mick offered me a year sponsorship deal, and well the others asked not to be named in the conspiracy. Nick Won, and i am still waiting for him to come good with his end of the deal. He argued his surfing did the talking.

The Opens final saw a paddle out that began 15mins before the heat. Max threw down a solid invert almost landing on yours truly, yeah he has a signature board but doesn't have much respect his fellow competitors safety.

Grand Masters, are beginning to resent the name "grand" before their title and went on strike before they paddled out in their finals. Talks have begun in changing the title, however could not be resolved before the end of the day. They did end up paddling out and well in my eyes put on a grand performance, Sydney hero Tony Rabbidge took it out showing strike or no strike he had it what it takes to own the first position.

In all it was a successful day, thanks for all the young guys for judging once again and for all those that stay around and hang out even after they have been knocked out of the competition. Ofcourse a huge thanks to our BBQ chefs and Steve and Greg for always making sure the comps run smoothly. While many of us are turning up late, sore from the night before or even not showing up at all Steve and Greg are always there rain, hail or shine.
I am sorry this has taken so long for me to post up, i promise to more diligent with the next entry. I've been away for a bit, physically and mentally. But now i am back with words, sentences and hopefully some pics next comp.

The final results from the comp are in detail below.

Tim Boreham

GROMMETS
1. Guys were ripping left and right peaks apart. There was plenty of action both in and out of the contest area. I watched Tristan Hogan exit two long barrels outside the contest area and a number of guys were getting some good boosts in between the comp flags. Without further ado the results looked like this:

GROMMETS
1st Cameron WILSON
2nd Alex MILLER
3rd Matt BANHAM
4th Will MULHAM

CADETS
1st Harry SARIN
2nd Jesse MULHAM
3rd Zac DURYEA
4th Josh NOOR
5th Michael BOWDEN
6th Jared DELAMONT

JUNIORS
1st Guy WILLIMENT
2nd Michael BURLEY
3rd Tim MALCOLM
4th Tim BOND
5th Martin SMITH
6th Miles MORTENSEN

OPENS
1st Justin VASSALLO
2nd Corey DAGLISH
3rd Ewan DONNACHIE
4th Alex WILKIE
5th Seb MILLER

D.K.
1st Dan REYNOLDS
2nd Ed FRANCE
3rd Shane DAVIS
4th Luke SHEARER
5th Mick PARKHILL

MENS
1st Corey DAGLISH
2nd Luke SHEARER
3rd Alex BENNETT
4th Ryan FENASSE

SENIOR MENS
1st Iain FULLARTON
2nd Dan REYNOLDS
3rd Nick CHANDLER
4th Mick PARKHILL

GRAND MASTERS
1st Greg CHAMBERS
2nd Andy MILLER
3rd Mal LEYDON
4th Steve McPHERSON

Thanks to everyone who helped out on the day. Once again our friends at wozthatyou.com were there to document the action so take a look and pick up a couple of shots or two. We've got the teams challenge coming up - those of you that have qualified will be notified shortly. Our next comp is set for Avalon on the 31st of May. See you all there. With any luck Boreham should be back by then so someone who actually has a clue will be able to use this blog site!

Cheers, Nick

Round Two - Whale Beach, 5th April 2009

Hi all,

Sorry for the late post - our intrepid correspondent Tim Boreham is off around the globe on behalf of SBC reporting on the terrible effects of Swine Flu on the US and Mexican economies. He might also get a few waves whilst he's over there. Let's hope he gets back alive.

Anyway, the second round was held as you know in pretty good, sizey conditions at Whaley. All the crew were happy to see some juice, and competitors didn't disappoint with a number of guys busting big to score some much-needed competition points. In the end the results turned out like this:

GROMMETS
1st Matt BANHAM
2nd Cameron WILSON
3rd Josh WILLIAMS
4th Alexander MILLER
5th William MULHAM
6th Cameron DRAKE

CADETS
1st Eugene HEAD-TOUSSANT
2nd Jesse MULHAM
3rd Oliver LLOYD
4th Spencer FROST
5th Henry BAIRD
6th Zac DURYEA

JUNIORS
1st Martin SMITH
2nd Tim MALCOLM
3rd Sam HALL
4th Michael BURLEY
5th Russell DAVIES
6th Michael MACKAY

OPENS
1st Matt PIKE
2nd Corey DAGLISH
3rd Alex WILKIE
4th Ricky MICHAEL
5th Seb. Today also marked the first shark attack on the northern beaches in over a decade but also the third in Sydney in three weeks. The attack at Avalon today happening around the same time our grommets and cadets were entering the water just a few beaches away at Curl Curl. The rest of the day we saw helicopters and jet skis constantly patrolling the waters in case of a sequel to the morning’s attack.

As for the waves, we were greeted by 2ft with the odd 3ft mega bomb in Curly’s predominantly shorey style banks. The waves were punchy and definitely not a bad way to start off the competitive year, with the wind going onshore during the day but never strong enough to be completely ruin the waves.

Results as follows;

Grommets

As always the groms can always be relied on to be full of energy and generally frothing on the whole day. Chuck a few coca-colas in the mix and you have a bunch of enthusiastic maniacs who are like the energizer bunny and never run out of energy. The final impressing me highly, with Cameron Drake and Matt Banham being unlucky in the final to not make the top two. As with all the finals on the day it was only a matter of 0.5s between the winner and other placings. Alex Miller and Wil Mulham were too good taking our first and second respectively, showing style I didn’t know was possible in kids that young. Congrats to the young guys, and pretty sure after a few comps everyone will know who they are, Alex is the kid who runs around changing the flags with more enthusiasm than any flag barer before him, and Wil is the kid showing his muscle around campus often tackling you to the ground if he doesn’t agree with your scoring on a wave.

1. Alex MILLER
2. Wil MULHAM
3. Matt BUNHAM
4. Cameron DRAKE

Cadets

Cadets saw a bunch of newcomers this year as did Juniors. Was good to see so many kids falling in love with the boog at a young age. The final was jam packed with a six kids hitting the watrer and the surfing was the best standard seen in cadets in the past few years. Whale beach grom Jesse Mulham showed off his skills in the final picking up where his younger brother left off in the grommets, but doing one better and taking first place. Alex Wilson, Nick Summers and Harry Sarin all surfed well specially considering it was hard to get waves in such a packed out final. Zac Duryea and Eugene “I have a long last name so I must be destined for greatness” Head-Toussaint shared the top three podium with Jesse.

1. Jesse MULHAM
2. Eugene HEAD-TOUISSAINT
3. Zac DURYEA
4. Harry SARIN
5. Nick SUMNERS
6. Alex WILSON

Juniors

The Juniors took the cake for most improved over summer, the kids were ripping. The standard of Juniors has gone up a massive level this year with kids throwing flips, reverses with the style of an opens surfer. All the guys in the final should just be stoked on making it that far, taking into account the amount of guys in Juniors this year and extremely competitive form of all the guys. Martin Smith, Tim Bond and Guy Williment dominated the final lucking into the best waves and pulling off the best moves. These guys will be the ones to watch in Juniors for sure, all pretty much catching their maximum of ten waves. Martin “marty” Smith (who has clearly been using his mum’s AB KING at home) ending up winning with some combos all the way to sure, the kid looks identical to Pierre and his surfing is damn similar too, technical and smooth. Tim and Guy were close on his heels tearing any wave they got to shreds with technical spins and leg crosses going down all over the place. Alex Natoli and Miles Mortensen were unlucky the waves did just not come their way, this division will be the one to watch for up and coming rippers. I’d say a few will be sporting a few stickers on their slicks before the years out.

1. Martin Smith
2. Tim Bond
3. Guy Williment
4. Alex Natoli
5. Miles Mortensen

Mens

It is good to see that every division this year is more competitive than ever, and Mens was no exception. Av kid Corey “the greenskeeper” Daglish came out blazing, showing in true Avalon style how to surf a heat; technical and aggressive. The other three guys in the final all surfed well with all round good guy Luke Shearer taking his first day off from BSC in three years to come take fourth place in the final. Alex and Ryan both had tight combos but just weren’t enough for the title. By now the waves were starting to drop with the tide going out and making it harder for any big moves to go down, so the combos came out firing.

1. Corey DAGLISH
2. Ryan FENASSE
3. Alex BENNETT
4. Luke SHEARER

Grand Masters

The Grand Masters paddled out with the class and experience of a young Sean Connery playing James Bond in his heyday. The BBQ King Mal Leydon took the final out, took some time out from supervising the snags to show us he has the goods to win finals. Greg Webster, Tony Rabbidge and Steve McPherson were sledging each other trying to put off each other’s game in the water and is hard to say what really decided the placings, the surfing or the witty remarks? Good to see the guys who run the club took time off the paper work to compete and show they can spin just like the rest of us. Bodyboarders running a bodyboard club, how it should be.

1. Mal LEYDON
2. Greg WEBSTER
3. Tony RABBIDGE
4. Steve MCPHERSON

Senior Mens

Iain Fullarton and Nick Chandler were showing experience in the water, and were close on the heels of Daniel “Daggles from whaley” Reynolds all heat until Dan took the lead with a clean barrel. From then on he took control of the heat with a few combos sealing his first place fate. In true whaley class Dan was humble in victory and strolled off into the sunset without saying much, he will now hide out in some south whaley wedges, not surfacing until next comp. Nick Chandler celebrated his second placing with some burnouts in the car park in his flaming hot vehicle.

1. Daniel REYNOLDS
2. Nick CHANDLER
3. Iain FULLARTON

Dropknee

Straight out final for the jack stance followers, good to see everyone’s been watching Roach and Dave Hubbard vid sections this summer and improved the dropknee level immensely. Daniel Reynolds, Shane Davis and Ed France the usual DK leaders had some new talent biting at their heals. Matt Pike the guy from whaley infamous for getting Ryan Hardy and Ben Player both drunk and dancing at his party threw the knee up with a new confidence and his summer DK sessions paid off earning him third place. Ed hadn’t slept that weekend, so fourth place was the best he could achieve. The DK veterans prevailed and won the division. Was awesome to see the whole final full of talent. Excited to see some Lackey Laybacks later in the year from the fellas.

1. Shane DAVIS
2. Danel REYNOLDS
3. Matt PIKE
4. Ed FRANCE
5. Alex NATOLI
6. Luke SHEARER

Opens

The opens final was full on, the bank moved out the back with the tide dropping to a lower than low. The six man final saw what I’m calling one of the best SBC finals I’ve seen in a long time, with Wilkie throwing flips like they were rolls, and Seb Miller spinning an air reverse that made me dizzy. Ewan Donnachie surfed with his usual class, chucking tight combo after tight combo on every wave. Timmy Minter was close on Ewan’s back chasing third place but was a bit distracted by his female friend waiting for him on the beach. Matt “Puerto” Pike was too busy sending any randoms in the comp area down the beach enforcing with his usual brawler attitude to really worry about surfing, and Jake Herbert a usual victor in the club was unlucky the waves just didn’t come his way. The standard was so high in this final it was hard to really find a standout winner, Wilkie and Seb simply pulled the two biggest moves of the day and were just too tight for the rest.

1. Alex WILKIE
2. Seb MILLER
3. Ewan DONNACHIE
4. Tim MINTER
5. Matt PIKE
6. Jake HERBERT

Overall the day was a big success, thanks to all the young guys for making an effort to judge all day. Thanks also to Mick our major sponsor from BSC for coming down, and of course to Greg Webster, Steve McPherson, and Nick Chandler who without we would not have a club. Next comp is at Whaley Sunday 5th of April, hopefully it turns on some wedges for the lot of us, and I hope we see another massive turnout for the second comp, because remember without the boogers we can’t boogey!

Love Timmy Boreham

PS>
We have engaged the services of Doug McFarlane from wozthatyou.com to document as much of the action from the comps this year as he can. He'll be at each comp taking shots and will upload them onto the wozthatyou.com site where they can be purchased for $5 for a jpeg. Pretty good deal for a snap of your competitive glory! We can't guarantee we'll get shots of everyone on the day but if you keep checking it out you might catch yourself. The web address to last comp's shots is here to paste into your browser:

http://www.surfphotosofyou.com/portfolio50972.html
